Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that comes from 2 sources:
1. Made naturally in the body by the liver
# liver produce more cholesterol when you eat a diet high in saturate and trans fats
# As when cell were damaged, they require cholesterol and fats to repair themselves
# Whenever we are stress, liver will release cholesterol as it will be sent to the adrenal glands for stress hormone production

2. Found in some foods
# Animal sources such as meat, poultry and full-fat dairy products

It occurs naturally in the body plays a vital role in how every cell works and is also needed to :
# allow body to produce Vitamin D
# enable body to make certain hormones
# makes up bile in the intestine for digestion

There are two main forms of cholesterol:

1. LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein)-cholesterol
Often referred to as ‘bad cholesterol
– too much is unhealthy
– they can build up in the arterial walls

2. HDL (High Density Lipoprotein)-cholesterol
Often referred to as ‘good cholesterol
– protective
– able to remove and carry cholesterol from the arteries and take it to the liver, where it is eliminated

The problem arise when there are Excess cholesterol in the blood :

Increase risk of getting heart and circulatory disease as it:
1. form plaque between layers of artery walls, making it harder for your heart to circulate blood
2. plaque can break open and cause blood clots:
# if the clot block an artery that feeds the brain, it cause a stroke
# if the clot block and artery that feeds the heart, it causes heart attack

It is important to take care of all of them to reduce the overall risk of it.
LDL – less than 2.6 mg/dL
HDL – more than 1 mg/dL
Total cholesterol – must be less than 5 mg/dL
