Mammogram, breast cancer screening for women in their 40s

If you are currently or more than 40 years old, its recommended to undergo a mammogram screening that help to detect cancer. I have done mine. Before i went to the hospital, i did some reading and when i was instructed for the x-ray its a little bit embarrassing but for the sake of health, just do it saja. Here are a some details i would like to share about mammogram.

What is a Mammogram?

Mammogram is an x-ray screening of the breast for early detection of breast cancer which help to improve chances of survival. Advisable do it every one to two years.

Why do i need a Mammogram?
Mammogram x-ray help to detect breast cancer at its earliest stages even before it could be felt in the breast and used to determine the overall status of breast health.

How is a screening performed?
1. x-ray
A female radiographer will ask you to undress from the waist up and she will positioned your breast one at a time between the surfaces of two plates on the mammography machine. The breast will be compressed between the 2 surfaces and x-ray films are taken. 2 views of each breast are taken from two different angles.

2. ultrasound
An ultrasound scan of the breast is done to check what is going on inside the breast tissue. The scan helps to identify if the lump is a harmless cyst filled with fluids, or a mass (most of the time, the lumps turn out to be fluid-filled cysts). The process is fast and painless.

Preparation for a mammogram examinations?
1. Do not apply perfume, deodorant, powder or cream on your breast or underarms on the day of mammogram.
These will interfere with the interpretation of the mammogram
2. Wear a blouse or pants or a long skirts as you need to undress from the waist up during the examinations
3. Make your appoinment after your menstrual period as your breast are less tender then.
4. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee, tea, carbonated drinks and chocolate a week or two before your appointment as caffeine can increase breast tenderness

Why is mammograme so important?
