6 heart healthy foods

Heart disease remains the number one killer in Malaysia. The Healthy Facts 2016 by Ministry of Health (MoH) shows that heart disease is still the main cause of death in both MoH Hospitals and private hospitals, with figures recorded at 22.77% and 27.70% respectively. Scary!

Healthier heart begins with us as this disease is closely related to our lifestyle. Its good to take baby steps then gradually moves to a healthy heart lifestyle so that we can reduce risk of heart disease.

Here are some food that can make a difference in the health of your heart:

1. Fish

Salmon are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids which is good for our heart. Try to eat salmon or any cold-water fish at least once or twice a week. Like us in Malaysia, apart from going to sushi king for salmon, fresh ones are not commonly found in supermarket. A quality supplement can help close this gap.

2. Mixed Nuts

Nuts are rich in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats which support heart health. Nuts like almonds, peanuts, pistachios and walnut are recommended to be eaten in moderation mode.

3. Berries

Blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries all great source of phytonutrients (including polyphenols and flavonoids) and are low in sugar. Studies have shown that eating mixed berries daily for eight weeks was enough to help maintain cholesterol and blood pressure within normal, healthy limits

4. Soluble Fiber
Fiber contains in oatmeal, beans, flaxseeds, and other healthy grains are helpful to keep cholesterol at the normal healthy limit.

5. Colorful foods
Rainbow color of foods such as beets, yellow peppers, carrots, sweet potatoes, red cabbage and others are a good way to get phytonutrients which are great for our heart health. The molecules such as anthocyanins, flavonoids, carotenoids, lutein, zeaxanthin, and others that add color to the colorful food play roles to our heart health.

6. Dark Chocolate.

Who does not love chocolate but dark chocolate that contains at least 70 percent of cocoa contains flavonoids which are benefit for our heart health. Eating dark chocolate in moderation key is recommended as it also contain sugar and fats.
